Only Tough Chicks Like Hockey

OK, this is my homage to hockey. I went to a hockey school:

It all began in the old arena - Snively. It was cramped and small and intimate and terrific. There were dead fish thrown on the ice during games with old rivals. There were familiar cheers and rituals. There was a lot of yelling. There were a lot of fights with jerseys pulled off over the head. There were great plays and bad losses.

In short, I fell in love with hockey during my college days. I had a hockey stick hanging on my wall (don’t ask), and a puck that I narrowly missed getting beaned by as a paperweight.

Recently, I went to a San Jose Sharks game, against the Anaheim Ducks, and had my ice lust rekindled. It’s a rivalry, and the teams were in the middle of a 5-game series. There were about 3 fist-fights, one semi-serious. There was tension. There was a bitter loss. Basically, I loved every minute of it.

Oh, if only I had strapped on a pair of skates at 3 and was a 6′2″ boy from Canada; I’d be kicking some ass right now. Is it wrong to have a boy just so you can groom him to be a hockey great?

Anyway, I’ll occasionally be posting a hockey hag’s insights on this page. I’m hoping to make the Sharks my team, but I can’t get the Boston blood out of me. Go Bruins!

Go Wildcats!

It’s pretty sad that the Bruins weren’t the same since Bobby Orr left the team. But that was over 30 years ago, though, and they had such wonderful players after, like Cam Neely and Ray Bourque. In speaking of Ray Bourque, one of my high school classmates turned out to be a younger generation cousin of Ray’s. Isn’t it cool to go to school with a celebrity relative?

While I appreciate a little American love for the great game… Anaheim* vs San Jose is more geographic tiff, than proper Hockey rivalry. You can only be granted Rivalry status if ice naturally occurs in your city.

    * This attitude has nothing to do with Anaheim beating my beloved hometown Ottawa Senators in the finals last year. My journalistic principles are too noble to allow such petty considerations to colour my judgment.

Classic comment, and correct, A.J. You can only have a true hockey rivalry if you know: A.) what black ice is and how it differs from generic ice, and B.) how to spot it while driving after a snowstorm in late March.

Being born and raised in British Columbia all i can say is hockey is the greatest sport on the planet. It doesn’t matter who you chear for, as long as they play on ice. Keep up the love for the game.
